RENEWABLE NATURAL RESOURCES

Renewable natural resources remain central to Africa’s survival and growth, but they are also some of the most fragile. Farmers lose large portions of their harvests to crop diseases they cannot identify in time. Communities face water shortages because they lack tools to monitor and manage usage. Forests and soils degrade year after year because warning signs are missed until the damage is already severe. These gaps leave millions of people vulnerable, weaken food systems, and increase the effects of climate change. At OBEN IT Solutions, we believe artificial intelligence can change this story by giving people the ability to see problems earlier and act faster, using tools that fit their everyday reality.

In agriculture, our systems can scan crops through simple mobile interfaces, spotting early symptoms of disease and guiding farmers on what actions to take before losses spread. This means that farmers, even in remote villages, can access the kind of expert knowledge that was once far beyond their reach. For water and land, AI can process satellite and local data to alert communities about overuse or degradation, helping them make better choices that protect resources. In fisheries, it can track trends in wild fish populations, while in fish farming it can support spawning success and improve survival rates to keep production stable. It can also aid wildlife conservation by detecting threats and changes in animal habitats. What connects all of these is the same principle, advanced intelligence made simple and usable in places where it can make the biggest difference.

The impact goes beyond preventing losses. With the right insights at the right time, farmers harvest more, families eat better, and local economies grow stronger. Communities become more resilient to climate shocks, while leaders and organizations gain the information needed to plan sustainably. What sets our approach apart is not just the technology itself but how we deliver it, accessible on basic devices, adaptable to local contexts, and built to empower rather than overwhelm. By doing this, we are creating a future where renewable resources are not just preserved but actively strengthened, securing food, water, and livelihoods for generations to come.

Q-PLANT VILLAGE: Quantum-Enhanced Deep Learning, Using AI to identify plant diseases from photos taken with smartphones

Crop diseases are one of the biggest threats to food security across Africa, costing millions of smallholder farmers a large share of their harvests each year. Accurate detection often depends on agricultural experts, but this knowledge is rarely available in rural communities. Our agricultural innovation explores how AI-powered crop health monitoring can close this gap and make modern farming support accessible at scale.

Using the well-established PlantVillage dataset, we developed a model capable of identifying plant diseases with high accuracy across key crops such as tomato, maize, potato, apple, bell pepper, cherry (including sour), grape, peach, and strawberry. The system then guides farmers on the right steps to take. Delivered through simple mobile interfaces, it brings expert-level knowledge to farmers using even basic smartphones. Beyond detection, it also recommends practical remedies, such as suitable drugs or treatments, so farmers know how to act immediately and prevent further losses.

The vision behind this system is simple but powerful: to democratize agricultural expertise in resource-limited settings. Imagine a small farming household able to detect crop disease early, receive trusted guidance on remedies, and prevent widespread losses that would have once been unavoidable. This is the kind of practical impact we are working toward, reducing losses, improving yields, and strengthening food security.

This innovation represents more than a technical experiment. It’s a step toward a future where cutting-edge AI supports farmers in their daily decisions, helps communities grow more resilient, and creates real pathways to economic empowerment for over 50,000 smallholder farmers across Africa.
